Join Caitlin in this workshop as we co-create our way to empathising with a mollusk.
Before decades of decline, freshwater pearl mussels were abundant in the rocky streams and rivers of Ireland. Life for these freshwater mollusks is very different to our own: a paradox of stillness and flux. They can live to 150 years old, grow half the length of your arm and have to hitch a ride to the gills of a salmon as juveniles. But how do they experience the world? Most freshwater mussels worldwide are in decline. Could it help us reverse the tide of their demise if we engage in the difficult work of putting ourselves in their shoes. During this workshop we will collectively create short sonic pieces (through field recording, writing or audio production) that muse on the lives of this little known species. You’ll find out about their fascinating lifecycle, drum up ideas as a group, then create 1-2 minute pieces (equipment provided). These pieces will be weaved together with my existing work and performed on the last night of the festival. She may dress as a pearl mussel…

Caitlin Kennedy is a creative audio maker, writer and bonafide science nerd. She weaves together human stories with the sounds of the natural world, incorporating field recording, long-form interviews and a heck of a lot of research. Ironically it was losing her high frequency hearing in her 20s that precipitated a deep interest in sound and the sensory information that we're missing as humans, something that only deepened after getting hearing aids. In the vast majority of her work she hopes to shed light on the fragile connections of habitats and all the cycles and symbioses they contain.
