The Seven Stones - Anno Mitchell

  • St Leonards Church Pevensey Road Saint Leonards-on-sea, England, TN37 6AS United Kingdom (map)

The Seven Stones is an audio installation centred on the wreck of the tanker Torrey Canyon on the Seven Stones reef between Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly in 1967. It’s an environmental disaster marked in coastlines, archives, data and ecosystems.

Seven Stones gathers together fragments: maritime insurance reports, wreck records, coordinates and deep-time maps, speculative ship logs, voices of oil and imagined narrative. These materials are woven into a shifting field of sound in which listeners encounter voices moving through space like currents or transmissions - overlapping and immersive.

Rather than telling a singular story, Seven Stones unfolds through drift, chorus and interruption. A fragment of a Lloyd’s casualty report might dissolve into coordinates of an ancient sea; ecological records interrupt human histories; navigational language slips into something stranger and more uncertain.

Anno Mitchell is a UK-based artist working across installation, drawing and performance. Her practice explores the sea and navigation as connective threads linking geography, history, technology and deep time. A recent strand of work reconstructs the 1967 Torrey Canyon wreck through AI-assisted writing, spatialised sound and rule-based performance, alongside a continued drawing practice engaging speculative futures and procedural mark-making.
