Trip to Gurindji Country
Helene Thomas

16 min

Five eager colleagues from the Central Australian Aboriginal Media Association (CAAMA) set out from Mparntwe/Alice Springs, travelling 985 kilometres north to Kalkarindji, a remote Aboriginal community in the Northern Territory, to take part in the 2025 Gurindji Freedom Day Festival. Leading the way is Orlando Rubuntja, a young Indigenous media creator and broadcaster from Kalkarindji. This radio feature follows Orlando as he wrestles with the discomfort of interviewing his own people — the shame that surfaces each time he asks for an interview — set against the deep pride he carries as a Gurindji man.

Produced by Helene Thomas in collaboration with Orlando Rubuntja, Caleb Doolan and Brenton Woods from the Central Australian Aboriginal Media Association (CAAMA). Freedom Day song by Lazy Late Boys

Mother Nature, played by punk legend Iggy Pop, has had a tough few thousand years. Tired and traumatized by relentless human expansion, they battle many of the ills that plague humans today: Addiction, anxiety, depression. And, of course, cynical, unpredictable rage.Their only solace? A good glass of whisky with their clumsy assistant Mr. Bee.

But all is not lost. Mother Nature decides it's time to make a change. And what better way to tell a tragic story about humans but through yet another podcast?

Enter 'Sweet Little Human' - a podcast all about the mess humans have made on planet Earth and their incredible ability to ignore and sidestep the issue. Even if it means the end for their silly little species.

Written, edited and produced by Nikolaj Kirk, Roxanne Batty, Jens Raunkjær and Magnus Møller.

Clint Best vs the Cosmos
Paul Nataraj

28 min

This episode is part of an ongoing collaboration between angling writer James Gilbraith and sound artist Paul Nataraj. In this, which was the first piece produced between the pair, is a story of competitive sports fishing at its most psychedelic. James takes on the 'National Association of Local Government Officers', the farmer's mad dog Ming, his long standing rival and best friend Mick Crook, and an epic comedown on a baking hot summer's day in Blackburn circa 1990. Who'll come out on top, Clint Best or the Cosmos?

Produced by Paul Nataraj
Words and narration by James Gilbraith.

On the YouTube comments for Arvo Pärts piece, Spiegel im Spiegel, instead of normal anonymous hate and internet trolls, there's a deeply touching window into humanity. People were sharing some really raw stuff about how the music made them feel, how they played it for their mom while they rubbed her back as she was passing, how their young child said it reminded them of their dad who had passed, how they feel hope in humanity when they hear it. Each is so real and raw it reads like a Mary Oliver poem. How is one piece of music doing so much for so many people? In this segment, I interview one man about how he played the music for his 2 week old daughter in the ICU, what the music means to him, and how he feels now that she's 7 years old.

Produced by Christian Hales
Music credits: Kookaburra by Rewind, Spiegel im Spiegel by Arvo Pärt and performed by Benjamin Hudson and Jürgen Kruse

El Poble

Carys Wall (UK/ES, 2024)

Carys Wall (UK/ES, 2024)

6 min

El Poble is a soundscape of a protest in Valencia, on the 9th of November 2024, when more than 100,000 people marched through the city demanding the resignation of the president of the Valencian Government. The protest was in response to the DANA flooding at the end of October which caused catastrophic damage in the region and killed over 200 people.

People chant "they're not deaths, they're murders" and "while you were eating, the people were dying", in reference to the Valencian president's long private lunch on the day of the flood. After a few moments of silence, protestors set off their phone alarms, referencing the emergency alerts which were sent at 20:11 on the day of the flood, when many had already drowned and bridges had already been washed away.

While the flooding and protests in Valencia were extensively documented through photography, this piece is a record of the sound of the moment - of the the anger, fear, and grief, as well as the solidarity, resilience, and hope that filled the air. El Poble experiments with the audio pan to create a jarring and disorienting listening experience.

Recorded and produced by Carys Wall

Linda Rae Dornan (CA, 2009-2025)

This is an audio art piece about dementia and caregiving recorded over many years as Linda cared for her partner, John Asimakos. The journal she kept was too emotionally difficult to read so she eventually transcribed it backwards to alleviate her own response. Transcription uses this reversed journal, cutup techniques and constant repetition collaged with John’s own voice as he tried to communicate. Constant repetition references the incomprehension and deterioration of language evident within the gradual decline of dementia patients. The audio piece attempts to share an interior space of intensity and tenderness within the isolated world of dementia.
