A bring-your-own-music listening cafe
Knut’s Kissa invites you to step into a cozy listening cafe where chatting and paying attention to music coexists. Based upon the concept of Japanese jazz kissas, Knut’s Kissa is similarly a cafe whose focal point is an absolutely superb hifi system, perfectly situated at Stereo Retro, St. Leonards’ premier shop for hifi, vinyl and coffee.

In contrast to standard music venues, the XMTR Festival kissa will operate a “bring your own” policy for recorded music — which means you are welcome to come along with CDs and vinyl to add to the playlist queue. How better to relax from the busy festival schedule than with a cup of coffee and a surprise selection of high fidelity music, without limitation by genre or algorithm.

The temporary proprietor of Knut’s Kissa is the experimental musician, radio artist and sound engineer Knut Aufermann who will fill any gaps in the playlist with a mix of obscure and wondrous recordings published by friends and colleagues. Together we look forward to a toe-tapping, shoulder-swaying, head-nodding, extraordinarily hi-fidelity listening experience.

Knut Aufermann is a radio artist, musician, organiser, writer, curator and lecturer. He plays improvised electronic music using various forms of audible feedback. Together with Sarah Washington he runs the project Mobile Radio investigating alternative means of radio production. Their works have been broadcast on more than 60 radio stations across the globe as well as in gallery contexts e.g. at 30th São Paulo Biennial and documenta 14. In 2016 Knut Aufermann was the artistic director of the Radio Revolten Festival in Halle (Germany), and in 2022 the artistic co-director of Radio Art Zone in Esch (Luxembourg). He is a co-founder of Resonance FM and the Radia network.
