Stand at the shoreline and listen is a soundwalk inviting you to do just that: to look at the sea and explore its myriad meanings. This meditative trio for listener, headphones and St Leonards-on-Sea is inspired by Virgina Woolf’s 'The Waves'.
In her rhapsodic novel, Woolf punctuates the words of six narrators with detailed descriptions of the sea, moving from sunrise to sunset. Similarly, Katharina Smets and Katherina Lindekens create a polyphonic experiential landscape, interlacing field recordings with musings on the sea by coast-dwellers from the four corners of the earth.
This soundwalk is designed to be experienced together, but with space — for your own thoughts, for your own experiences of the sea in this shared moment. In the end, we are all looking at the same body of water, but with our own eyes, ears and bodies.
Katharina Smets + Katherina Lindekens
Katharina Smets turns documentary material into audio stories — for the stage and for podcasts. She collaborates closely with composers and live musicians, moving between electronic and classical composition, and is always experimenting with new narrative forms of audio. She keeps coming back to the same questions: what it means to belong somewhere, how we find our identity, and what truly connects us. Katharina holds a PhD in arts and teaches at the Royal Conservatory of Antwerp. She's also a proud co-organiser of MIRP (Meeting of Independent Radio Producers) — organising and gathering audio people is something she genuinely loves doing.

Katherina Lindekens has a background in literature and musicology, and works as a dramaturg in music (theatre), opera, dance and audio. Alongside that, she is developing her own audio practice, with a focus on field recording and the twilight zone between words, music and sound. For Opera Ballet Vlaanderen, she produced the podcast 'De stemmen' in collaboration with Katharina Smets and Maarten Buyl, the soundscape 'Werelden in wording' in collaboration with Inne Eysermans, and a series of audio introductions. With Inne Eysermans, she also created field recording-based compositions for the concert 'Da Pacem' by B’Rock Orchestra & Vocal Consort.
