Composing Compost : Georgia Walker and Nicola Mecca

Sound and soil are both mediums for memory. They hold traces of what was, and can transform those traces into something new through decay and resonance.

Join us for a participatory compost installation in which we explore grief, rotting, and transformation through the live composting of sounds and objects.

Participants are invited to bring organic materials they would like to compost (a letter from an ex, a clipping of hair, a flag) and to send sounds they would like to compost (a voice message from a loved one, a speech, a scream).

Together, we will create a live compost composition: burning, cutting, and mixing the materials into a pile of finished compost, while the sounds are added to a sonic compost of field recordings from the area. We will listen as they reverberate, decay, combine, and ultimately become something new.

The installation is communal - everyone can participate - and the resulting composts can be taken home in jars and via a soundcloud link.

Please send us your sounds for composting by 1 September 2025 to georgiadotwalker (@) gmail (dot) com
