Gender, Omission and Audio Ethics: A Live Listening Event with Isobel Anderson & Gascia Ouzounian

  • Electro Studios Seaside Rd, St Leonards, Saint Leonards-on-sea TN38 0AL, UK (map)

Whose voices do we choose to include—and whose are left out? As audio makers, storytellers and documenters, these decisions are never neutral. But could there ever be a case for deliberate omission in response to decades of conscious and unconscious exclusion?

In this live listening and discussion session, Girls Twiddling Knobs podcast host and co-producer Isobel Anderson invites you to explore these questions through the lens of gender and experimental composition. Together, we’ll listen to her immersive audio documentary of Time Loops, which follows composers Shiva Feshareki and Sarah Angliss as they re-compose exhibition displays at the Science Museum for Icebreaker Ensemble.

At first, everything appears as expected. But as we listen more closely, an unexpected voice begins to shape the work, and another, perhaps unforgivably, is missing.

After the listening, Isobel will be joined by Gascia Ouzounian to delve deeper into the ethical questions raised, with space for your own reflections and responses.

Isobel Anderson is a musician, sound artist, and Founder & Director of Girls Twiddling Knobs, a global online education platform and podcast dedicated to providing radically different female-celebrating music technology resources and education programmes.
