The Wind Phone is a communication channel between the living and the dead.

This installation is inspired by a Japanese phenomenon. In the town of Ōtsuchi, an elderly gardener created a phone booth with a disconnected telephone after the death of his beloved cousin. Each night, he would speak into the phone, sending his words out into the wind.

After the earthquake and tsunami of March 2011, news of the Wind Phone spread, and people began making pilgrimages there to speak to their deceased loved ones.

This Wind Phone is a little different. It features an 11-minute audio piece and invites you to reach out to someone you have loved and lost. In words, in writing, or in silence. Maybe your message will be carried by the breeze.

Nanna Hauge Kristensen

Nanna Hauge Kristensen is a Copenhagen-based anthropologist and audio creator working at the intersection of art, ethnography, and audio documentary. Her practice is grounded in a deep interest in themes of listening and loss. As both a maker and a listener, she is drawn to intimate, sensory, and open-ended explorations of human experience.

Her work has received numerous international awards and has been featured by the BBC, Danish Radio, and at festivals and on platforms around the world. She is currently conducting a sound ethnographic project exploring the continuing bonds between the living and the dead.
