Under the Hood - Clingradio turns salon hairdryers into listening devices, with a built-in sound system and repurposed timer dial as the volume control.

They each play different 18-hour compilations of the 6-hour live weekly radio show Clingradio, produced by Sarah Washington for the first year of Resonance FM, from 2002-3.

The show was a remarkable sonic laboratory where eccentric could-be radio makers were enticed to dip their toes into radio space through exploration of outlandish ideas and spontaneous collaborations with one another on the night. There was an ever-changing house band, and connections to remote locations in an era before that became commonplace. Artists and musicians passing through London, or by the door of number 9 Denmark Street, and even random listeners who called in were invited to pop by and contribute. Numerous individual radio series emerged out of this wild celebration of ephemerality, communality, and suspension of normality.

Sarah Washington

Sarah Washington creates radio, installations and events, and performs improvised music with self-made electronics. A co-founder of Resonance FM and the radio art network Radia. Commissions include radio for Tate Modern, London (2007), 100-day station for the 30th São Paulo Bienal (2012), and programmes for SAVVY FUNK, documenta 14 (2017). In 2016 she co-curated the Radio Revolten festival, in 2022 was joint Artistic Director of Radio Art Zone for Esch22. In 2005 she founded the project Mobile Radio with Knut Aufermann, which has produced and taught radio art in 23 countries. Her anthology Radio Art Zone was published by Hatje Cantz in 2023.
