Radio 4x4 - Tom Roe

  • The Old Bank 3 Grand Parade Saint Leonards-on-sea, England, TN38 0DD United Kingdom (map)

Radio 4x4 is a collaborative radio transmission performance, created by Tom Roe. Four simultaneous audio performances are separately sent through FM transmitters tuned to different frequencies and are picked up by radios positioned throughout a performance space and tuned to those four frequencies. The audience becomes an active collaborator in the performance, "mixing" the audio feeds by moving about the space among the four signals. Dozens of Radio 4x4s have taken place in the United States and abroad since 2003.
Tom Roe is founder, with others, of pirate radio station 87X and free103point9 and non-profit Wave Farm, and full-power radio station WGXC. He is a radio artist, writer, editor, DJ. "Donald Drumpf Theatre" is his weekly radio show, and Roe writes about radio art at Turn On The News | Substack . Roe is a sound transmission artist who performs with transmitters and receivers using multiple bands (FM, CB, walkie-talkie), as well as prepared CDs, vinyl records, electronics, and theremin(s). He coined and popularized the term “transmission art.” Roe has also written about music for The Wire, Signal to Noise, and The New York Post.
