TRANSCRIPT
Tomás: Confection… is an English word. But my brain hears in Spanish: “Confección.”
William: Excuse my ignorance. Why are you holding that gadget so close?
Tomás: Ha! To catch the little sounds.
William: Ah! The needles?
Tomás: Uh huh.
Tomás: This is William Cifuentes. He's been in the business of confección for 49 years. I'm in his workshop with my friend Fefe. Because Fefe needs a suit. He and his girlfriend Paula decided to get married.
William: And you're sure about this?
Fefe: Yes, sir
Tomás: (Laughs)
Fefe: Very sure.
Tomás: So, okay, first things first, right? Taking the measurements.
William: The back is foooooorty-six.
Tomás: But when Fefe turns around, William makes a worried face.
William: The thing is, he's got a little more… seat. I mean, uh… I mean—
Distant voice: Butt.
Tomás: The problem is he's got a big butt?
William: Yes! (laughs)
Tomás: You think you know your friends. Until a tailor measures them.
Tomás: You do have a big butt, man.
Fefe: I know.
Tomás: I'd never noticed that. Twenty years I've known you, and I'd never noticed your big butt.
Fefe: Thirty years you've known me.
Tomás: Thirty years, man.
Tomás: For this magnificent, one-of-a-kind body of Fefe's, William has to break out his best needles and do what a tailor does: measure, measure again…
William: We've got ninety-five…
Tomás: Chalk the lines, cut,
William: for forty seven…
Tomás: Take a break for a whisky…
William: Gentlemen, it's a pleasure to serve you. Such a pleasure.
Tomás: Gossip about his colleagues in the neighborhood…
William: That one's just a bastard. Sorry, forgive me.
Tomás: While we eat little candies made for children.
(a wrapper crinkling…)
William: And you start to, to sew it: up and down and up and down and up and down and up and down and up and down.
(the sewing machine's bell)
William: Done.
Tomás: Until — voilà.
Tomás: How do you feel, Fefe?
Fefe: Elegant.
Tomás: You look elegant.
Fefe: I've never had a pair of pants that actually fit my body.
(laughs)
Fefe: Let's go then. I'll leave this at your place.
Tomás: Yeah?
Fefe: Yeah, I'll get ready at your place on Wednesday.
Tomás: Wednesday arrives.
(doorbell rings, repeatedly)
Tomás: I'm going to kill you.
(opening door)
Tomás: You're such a pain.
Fefe: Hi, little Tommy. How's it going… Hey, my suit!
Tomás: Fefe puts on the pants, puts on the vest, puts on the jacket. Just like at school when we were little, and we'd change to play soccer. We were always last, because the two of us would stay behind talking nonsense. But today he looks happier… and more nervous.
Fefe: Son of a bitch, my hands are shaking. Ugh, can you help me?
Tomás: I tie the knot in his tie while he, quietly, says things to himself.
Fefe: I'm going to marry the love of my life, I'm going to marry the love of my life, I'm going to marry the…
Tomás: The other friends arrive.
First friend, distant: (shouting)
Tomás: It's time.
Second friend, distant: Let's go!
Fefe: To get married.
(door closes)
