Radiophonic Travel Agency - The Radiophonic Institute

  • Unit 2 Gallery 10 London Road Saint Leonards-on-sea, England, TN37 6AE United Kingdom (map)

Walk, run, swim, drive, fly and meander around the world as the Radiophonic Travel Agency transports you to places near and far. Freed from guidebooks and narration our journeys allow you to explore unusual and sometimes impossible locations. Composed from long-form field recordings and created by a global network of sound artists, the journeys range from adventurous audio trips such as "Hiking with the Yamabushi Mountain Monks" and “A Decent into Zollverein Coal Mine” to esoteric soundscapes that grant unlikely access, like "A Week In The Life Of A Tree" or "A Journey Through The US Postal System".

The Radiophonic Travel Agency will be bringing these journeys into the physical world with a Pop-up Travel Agency. Pick a destination from one of our brochures to ‘book your holiday’. You will be given a handheld radio, headphones and an FM frequency, which will grant you access to your chosen journey on a temporary mini-FM station. Inspired by Tetsuo Kogawa and the Japanese microbroadcasting movement, this project is a fun take on immersive narrative-free storytelling.
Spend as much time with your station as you like, embark on several trips or even create new soundscapes with multiple stations.

The Radiophonic Institute was born from the profound legacy of the BBC Radiophonic Workshop to create, connect and champion innovation in sound and music. Led by the Ivor Novello award-winning composer Matthew Herbert, TRI aims to inspire and enable a new generation of diverse creative practitioners to collaborate and challenge the pre-existing conventions of music-making and sound design.

TRI’s flagship initiatives include The Oram Awards, which elevates the work and voices of women and gender non-conforming artists, and the Sound Of The Year Awards – an annual open call that welcomes public submissions from across the world. TRI also produces the Radiophonic Travel Agency, an interactive podcast that allows you to explore unusual locations, and the Museum of Sound, an online portal for listening to sound in all its complexities.

TRI has previously received support from the PRS Foundation, BBC R&D, Arts Council England and Creative Estuary to produce public engagement programmes, digital initiatives and artwork commissions alongside skills training and workshops. TRI’s collaborations extend to providing audio and digital services for institutions including the BFI, BBC, Dolby, The Space and the British Library.
